NEW WORK: May / June

Some work from the last two months using only the iPod and iPad. I am getting more comfortable using the mobile approach. It seemed rather awkward starting out, but now is somewhat easier and I am beginning to feel more in control of the process. I am also trying to do a better job of getting the work out by exploring Instagram, EyeEm, and Esty. All this is new to me and seems to take a lot of time out of the day. However it apears to be what is needed if you want to have wider contact with the photo/art community in the digital age.

NEW DIGITAL COLLAGES

Some new collage work I did over the last couple of months. I combined several types of camera images and editing techniques. Processing was done using both ipad and photoshop. So far this combination has worked well for me, but I would like to eventually get to the point of using just the iPod/iPad. In part this is to really learn the iPad apps, and secondly not always fall back to using old ways.

DISTILLATION 3

Some recent work from the "Distillation Series". Still trying to sort out what works. All have been shot using the iPod Touch 5G combined with a modified Squid Cam lens. Post processing is pretty simple and just involves adjustment of brightness, contrast and saturation. One interesting thing that I have discovered is that many times I would have not shot the subject with a more traditional approach, and this method has opened up a whole new world for me.

PLAYA REFLECTIONS

A few works in progress from a new series called Desert Navigation.  Many of the original images are from my residency at PLAYA and were the starting point, but are more complex than recent work in that they utilize pinhole images, lens based photos, texture screens, and iPhone apps in their creation.

While I was at the PLAYA residency I started a new series of abstract photos. They were shot using my iPod Touch 5G and Squid Cam lens with the front element removed. The concept was to reduce the photograph to its essential forms and  produce a soft focus abstract image. Some of these images were shot during the residency and others were shot after returning home to Albany.

I have returned from my adventures in Eastern Oregon. I spent two weeks at Playa, a artists reidency program. Had a great time, and met some amazing artists and writers from all over the U.S. For the most part, I spent my time hiking and shooting on the playa, but I also did some shooting in Paisley, the Paisley Caves, Picture Rock Pass, and Christmas Valley. The two weeks really flew by and I was not ready to come back quite yet.

Some new ICM abstracts from the last month or so. All but the Littoral Zone were shot with my E-P2/pinhole set up. Range Fire combines pinhole images with a straight photograph. The last one was a combination of digital images, iPod images and iPad apps.

A few photos from the family picnic on the 4th. All were captured using the iPod Touch 5G and  Hipstamatic app. Settings: Lens - Tinto 1884, Film - Black Keys B+W film.

I keep being drawn back to this lens/film combination.  It does have some of the qualities that toy camera and Lensbaby work has, and yet seems even more primal. For some reason these qualities touch me in a way that straight photography rarely does. I don't know why the film is called a B+W because there are always some areas of very desaturated color in the photo. I do like the end result, however I can do without the frame, and have been thinking about removing it from the images for  printing.

LaSells Show

Some of my ICM work is in a Albany Artists show "10x10" at the LaSells Center on the Oregon State University campus. I got pulled away from doing these with my exploration of mobile photography and have finally gotten back to working on these two. I had hoped to be able to combine this style of working with the iPod/iPad, but so far have not been able sort out the workflow. We'll see if it comes to pass in the future.

Reteo Style Attempts

Along with everything else, I have been try out the iPod Touch with Hipstamatic app to see if could find a way to achieve a toy camera look. I have been torn between what I have gotten using my M43 camera and the Lensbaby system, and the mobility of the iPod. There are so many choices in camera apps and within processing app that it has taken several months to get there. I think I have found the solution. Below are some earlier attempts using different lens/film combinations, and the final photo which was shot using the Tinto 1884 lens paired with the Black Keys BW film.
